In my last post, “Alternative Wedding Sites: Cheers, Anheuser-Busch Biergarten!”, the spotlight shone on the Merrimack Anheuser-Busch Biergarten as a fresh feature for a
Well, once I started thinking of other alternative options, there was no stopping me. I never
realized how many unique spaces are available, accessible, and affordable for new takes on
nuptials. Since there are so many possibilities, you should probably expect future posts to shine the light on a few more, especially if Scott and I get to shoot there – fingers crossed!
But, for now, here are my top five unique spaces to host a wedding — those places where
offbeat meets outstanding…
Kelly’s Top Five Unique Wedding Photo-Ops
Although we absolutely believe that the traditional has a time-honored and deserving role with
respect to wedding planning, trends increasingly point slightly or seriously askew of the long
established “norm.” Even The Knot, for example, cites The 17 Most Unique Wedding Venues
We’ve Ever Seen, while Ariel Meadow Stallings has created an entire Offbeat Bride blog
designed to “Altar Your Thinking.”
If you’re considering kicking convention to the curb, check out the following…
Photo-Op #1 Museums
Whether you’re an artist or just appreciate the efforts of artistic types, getting married in a
museum is a fabulous way to access amazing aesthetics and treat your guests to a
sophisticated setting. Local to our studio, Manchester’s Currier Museum of Art hosts elegant
weddings; “Where Your Wedding Becomes a Work of Art,” and even provides a list of “Currier
Approved Caterers,” helpful in narrowing down compelling catering choices.
Of course, let’s not forget that Massachusetts is barely a hop, skip, and jump away, with dozens
upon dozens of museum choices in Boston and throughout the state to consider. We’re partial
to the absolutely idyllic Griffin Museum of Photography — no surprise there.
Photo-Op #2 – City or State Park
Keeping it local again, we’ve got plenty of city parks in our area that promise perfect wedding
potential. Between Mine Falls Park in Nashua, Stark Park in Manchester, and state-level
options, like Wellington State Park at Newfound Lake or the fascinating Fort Stark in New Castle right on the NH coast where we completed an LGBTQ Styled Elopement recently (scroll to the end to see more photos from this favorite off-beat locale of ours!), the opportunities to host your wedding in a natural setting, either close to home or slightly further afield, are a-plenty.
Photo-Op #3 – Ice Caves
Taking that natural setting up a notch, imagine hosting your wedding at the Polar Caves.
There’s nothing quite like natural history and outdoor adventure to give your nuptials a timeless edge. Ideal for adventure-enthusiasts, exploring the Polar Caves together is the perfect terrain to embark on the new territory of marriage.
Photo-Op #4 – Theater
A dramatic venue, for sure, though perhaps not as pulse-pounding as the Polar Caves, a
theater lends a sense of timeless excitement and sophistication to any special event. You’re the
star, after all. Consider a curtain call at Manchester’s Palace Theater on historic Hanover Street and treat your guests to a once in a lifetime show. Again, there is simply no shortage of theaters throughout the state or further south, lighting up the Boston skyline across the border.
Photo-Op #5 – Zoo or Aquarium
Okay, we’re squeezing in a two-fer here, but with good reason. Both zoos and aquariums speak
to the animal lovers among us, not to mention that inner child who was going to grow up to be a zookeeper, lion tamer, or synchronized swim coach for a school of dolphins. These spaces are
whimsical, designed to elicit carefree, fun feelings just by their very design. Between Boston’s
New England Aquarium, Southwick’s Zoo, Stone Zoo, Franklin Park Zoo, you’ve got an
abundance of animal attractions to consider for a truly wild wedding.
Remember, these are just my (current) top five favorites for offbeat and outstanding spaces to
host an unforgettable wedding. Depending on your personal preferences, there are other
options that I would love to take a shot at with you. Drop me a line so we can put our heads
together and find a fabulous venue to feature your unique wedding.
And, as promised, here are a few more photos from our Styled Elopement at Fort Stark!
