Picture-Perfect: What to Wear to Your Next Photo Session - Tips and Tricks for Choosing the Right Outfits

When it comes to a photo session, choosing what to wear can be just as important as selecting the perfect location or hiring a skilled photographer.

The clothes you wear can have a significant impact on the overall outcome of your photos, setting the tone and conveying a certain mood or style. But with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to figure out what to wear for your next photo session.

In this blog post, we'll discuss some tips and tricks for choosing the right outfits to ensure that you look and feel your best in your upcoming spring or summer photos. Whether you're taking family portraits, engagement photos, or professional headshots, these guidelines will help you make the most of your photo session wardrobe.

If you’re anything like me, you’re loving this revival of 70’s inspired boho outfits complete with flared jeans and flowy, floral blouses accented with pops of jewel tones. What I love most about this particular style is that anyone can rock it, and it can feel more casual than true boho styles that typically include maxi skirts or dresses.

The key with this type of style is to play with different patterns and textures but keep a strong palette of 1-2 main colors to work with. Like the family above, it’s often helpful to pull from one person’s outfit when choosing accent colors (such as the mother’s blouse in the above session).

If a retro-inspired outfit isn’t your style, don’t worry! We have plenty more options to go through below!

All those who are here for the drama, raise your hands!!

While the retro boho style above features more casual looks, true boho styles often feature dramatic and flowy dresses or skirts much like this vintage lace gown worn by the pregnant mama in this maternity session.

Wearing outfits such as this add an emotive touch to the session, especially when the maxi skirt or dress blows in the wind during a mountain or beach family session.

When incorporating other members of the family or partners, I tend to suggest putting them in less dramatic attire to really emphasize the client wearing the more emotive clothing. Because many boho outfits feature neutral tones, it’s easy to balance with earth tones or even pops of jewel tones much like the partner and son are wearing above.

Next up — earthy neutrals and blending the boho with casual street style.

What if you have a love for both the boho and the casual? No worries! There are ways to marry the two styles to fit your preferred vibe.

If this combination is what you desire, choose one to two members of your family (or one partner) to wear a flowy skirt or dress and pair it with accessories that are more street style like vintage t-shirts or jean jackets, etc.

Then, put other members in earthy neutrals or jeans with tops that have a more street style to them but still incorporate common boho colors like olive green, mustard yellow, ivory, etc. You can even add street shoes to round out the combination of styles as seen in the collage above.

The last style featured on this blog post is a full street style with a combination of dark neutrals (yes, black is a neutral) and pops of lighter tones such as blush pink and teal blue.

What you will notice, however, is that even though the colors are not your typcial warm tones like mustard yellow or rust orange, the tones of the blues and pinks are in fact warm, which I always encourage when working with me because it marries well with my personal editing style. This is an important point to note as you will want to check with your photographer to see if there are colors that they love and colors that they don’t when first beginning the styling process.

This collage features full street style, which is a perfect look for more urban sessions that might take place downtown or on the top of a parking garage.

I know that choosing what to wear for a photo session can seem like a daunting task, but with a little planning and consideration, together we can create picture-perfect looks that complement your style and showcase your personality. Remember to coordinate tones and patterns while considering the location and time of day, and choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable.

If this still seems overwhelming, know that I work closely with all of my clients, allowing them to borrow from my extensive Client Closet and/or creating personalized style boards for each person being photographed to make the task much easier for them! This part of the planning process has a huge impact on the final product, so don’t heistate to reach out for help!
